Labor Day Brunch at Fido’s

Thanks to a few local friends, I discovered a new favorite - Fido’s near Vanderbilt.

The scene was a mix of trendy urbanites, indie music types and even young families - lured in to Fido’s casual atmosphere. I had what amounted to an open face breakfast burrito of sorts, with egg, salsa with cilantro, potatoes and a nice big slide of avocado on top, all resting on a spread of soft shelled tortilla triangles. Yum. And the coffee was great.

My only complaint: the line snaking nearly out the back of the restaurant was a bit of a bummer, and the emphasis on self service meant we went without a few things we ordered.

Here’s a great map of Nashville coffee houses. Feel free to add to it, or let me know if you’ve got any faves.

I was almost finished with my brunch at Fido, an amazing veggie omelet, bagel and lovely fair-trade organic coffee, when I saw a giant cockroach crawling on the wall (we were in the front part that faces 21st). And then my friend saw another one crawling on the floor. So. I love Fido, but I do not love mutant bugs around my food, and so I do not eat there anymore. A while later I interviewed the woman who runs Las Paletas, and her husband runs Fido, so I felt really bad since she was hands-down the easiest interview of my life (and paletas are soooo tasty). So I have caved in and bought their chai tea since my experience. But seriously… ginormous roaches. Be on the lookout.

Gross.

I’d probably have different feelings about Fido if I’d have encountered monster bugs too.
